The 2nd Annual Reggae on the Grass is Colorado’s premier Reggae music festival. Showcasing some of Colorado’s greatest local Reggae acts alongside international headliners, Reggae on the Grass is a free event that is open to the public. This event is held as a part of the Levitt Pavilion Free Summer Concert series and will take place at the Levitt Pavilion here in Denver, CO on Sunday August, 25th 2019 with doors opening at 2:00pm and sweet Reggae music from 3:00pm-9:00pm.
After the first attempt was rescheduled due to severe weather, it goes without saying that both artists and concert goers alike are ready for the redo. Reggae on the Grass is presented by BloodPreshah & KGNU and will be hosted by local legend, Rasta Stevie. Below you will find a brief bio for just some of the many great Reggae artists we will be seeing perform this weekend, alongside links to listen to their music. The event has many acts hailing from Colorado as well as some big name Jamaican headliners that are for sure going to mash up the place.
Iba MaHr
Iba MaHr has been described as being a Reggae/lover’s rock sensation in Jamaica right now. He promotes roots and culture in his music with Rastafari as his inspiration. He is perhaps best known for his most recent hits “Million Thoughts” and “Get Up & Show.” Checkout his music videos on YouTube before the show and get ready to dance and sing along. You can catch him before the show at Sky High Thursdays this week at the Truth Lounge in Denver as well as this Friday at Tropical Vibes on Academy Blvd.
Fyakin comes to us from the town of Portmore, Jamaica. Fyakin has worked with and been surrounded by Reggae legends such as I Wayne and Gyptian and you can tell in his music that he strives for the same greatness. His music touches many topics, but keeps a roots message and makes plenty of references to the island where he came up. Currently his song and video “Green” is racking up views like crazy on YouTube across the globe.
Dubskin in one of Colorado’s best home grown Reggae acts. They have produced 4 full length studio albums and have been performing together as a group for over 10 years. You can often find them performing in their home town of Fort Collins, CO, alongside the likes of Reggae superstars like Stephen Marley, SOJA, Collie Buddz, and more. Their dub heavy live performances continually draw larger and larger crowds of supporters who have been watching them grow over the past decade.
Mallory Williams is a singer, keyboardist and producer from Kingston, Jamaica, who now lives and performs in in Denver, Colorado. He has played keyboards for the likes of Ziggy Marley and is perhaps best known for his mega-hit “She Boom” which made it to #1 on the charts in Jamaica. His Latest single is titled, “Smoke it Like A Marley” and can be found on all digital platforms.
Notorious Jamaican dancehall DJ and now Denver resident, Daddy Screw, a.k.a. Michael Johnson, is a veteran sound system deejay born and raised in Kingston. He is best known for some of his early 90s singles, but has some more recent releases as well as recent performances right here in Ganjarado.
The Colorado Binghistra group is a group of musicians that performs traditional Nyabinghi Rastafarian drumming, chants and prayers. Their performances are both musical and highly spiritual, with the inclusion of many different types of instruments and the powerful spoken message of Jah.
Red Sage is a Reggae/Soul band from Denver, Colorado. The group’s sound is an eclectic mix of Reggae, Blues, & Soul. They have been playing Reggae music across the Front Range for several years now and have been the opening act for bands such as New Kingston, Black Uhuru, Morgan Heritage, and many more. Their newest album “Pick Up the Pieces” is out now on all digital music platforms.
Niceness is Rocky Mountain Reggae music at its finest. Hailing from Telluride, Colorado, Niceness plays conscious music at its core. Among its ranks include activists, an organic farmer, a life coach, a permaculture designer, a Buddhist bodybuilder champ, two music teachers, an adventurer, an arborist entrepreneur, and a Doctor of Psychology.They have shared the stage with Reggae heavy hitters such as Black Uhuru, the Itals, & the Wailers.
DJ BloodPreshah is Colorado’s Premier Reggae Music DJ and Reggae Music Specialist. He has been involved in the Reggae Music Industry for over 15 years, as a Top DJ, Audio Engineer, On Air Talent, Booking Agent, and Promoter. He also happens to be one of the masterminds behind Reggae on the Grass. If it is Reggae and it’s happening in Colorado, you can pretty well guarantee that BloodPreshah has his hands in it somehow.
Elle Green is a Rapper/Singer born and raised in Denver, Colorado. Her Soul/Hip-Hop infused style lends itself well to fans of all genres as does her stunning voice. Check out some of her tracks on SoundCloud and get ready to show her some love this weekend.
Spellbinder is a Colorado Hip-Hop/Rap/Reggae vocalist and producer, performing at events and shows across the state. His style includes some heavy mashups with Rap as well as Reggae infusions. He has shared the stage with many of the other artists on this page.
Ras Marcus Benjamin has been writing and performing Dub poetry for over 20 years. He is well known within the Denver Reggae/Sound System/Rasta community and brings an uplifting message and positive vibes through spoken word and poetry wherever he performs.
The Groove Thief is a dub and Reggae connoisseur, formerly based out of Hong Kong, now residing in Denver, CO. He is a radio host for KGNU (event sponsor) on its “Reggae Transfusion” and “Dub Palace” shows and can be found around Denver with his own sound system throwing down Dub and Reggae mixes and promoting sound system culture.
Gracie Bassie comes from Durango, Colorado and has a Reggae music resume that could rival any other performer here. She has spent much of her career residing in Kingston, Jamaica and backing real roots rockers such as Anthony B, Max Romeo, & Leroy ‘Horsemouth.” She plays some in your face bass as well as sings and puts on a great show.
Logan LaValley is a young multi-instrumentalist from Texas who blends styles of Reggae, Folk, Rock & Blues together in his music to create a unique sound of his own.
A native Jamaican turned Denver resident, DJ Chris Milly can be found playing Reggae at a variety of local club spots around the Denver area. He is passionate about Reggae music and bringing Jamaican sound system culture to Denver in a big way. He keeps a busy schedule of performances around Denver and Reggae on the Grass is just the first one of that day for him.
A magician at a Reggae show? What more do you need to know? It’s a family friendly event, Mysto is apparently the man, and he’s going to do some magic tricks at some point during the day. No complaints here.
DJ Mi Twice is a Denver local Reggae DJ, artist, & promoter. She is the resident DJ at Sky High Thursdays at the Truth Lunge for their weekly rooftop party. She plays Reggae, AfroBeat, Dub and more.
Her moto is Rise. Root. Release. and it is through these steps that she will bring us all back to life, through breathing exercises and introspective and dub infused meditation. Dubwise Yoga is a peaceful community yoga practice here in Denver with sessions that suit all needs, including a weekly POC session.
